They All Want To Consume You

I will freely admit that I joined Threads as soon as it launched. To be honest, it was just out of excitement that my favorite youtuber was there and also it seemed like a much cleaner and less negative version of Twitter.

But, more and more I’m getting a feeling that it’s just not good. I mean, the permissions it needs are a lot. And it totally does scrap your data, and just… it’s such a disappointment, you know? I just keep thinking that what I wish for is to go back to an earlier point in the internet. Back to that time when everyone used to have their websites, and basically when there were more thank like four or five websites that we could go to. When searching for something on google gave you actual results that were true and not just website after website with bullshit information made just so it was tailored to search results.

Hell, let’s go back to forums already. I’m so fed up with the state of things on the internet. The damn thing is making us all go mad. It’s filling our head with mental illness and just making the world a worse place one click at a time.

The other day I stumbled across an old website from some goth girl (and I do mean old. Like, it had updates from events way back in 1998) and I found the whole thing just so fascinating. It was kind of refreshing to see pages full of memories, and old pictures that weren’t absolutely perfect. Pictures taken in the middle of a party where no one was posing. And they were very low resolution, with shitty lighting, no one was picture perfect, and it was all so beautiful because it was so, so real. And I think that that’s what we are all craving. I think that’s why so many people are drawn to tiktok (I mean, aside from the addictive dopamine rush, and the chinese algorithm carefully crafted to destroy the US), because we want so badly to find something real through our screens. We want to connect to someone that is true, but more and more we find that the things that we thought were true really weren’t. The great majority of influencers are fake, instagram is fake, twitter is fake AND angry.

And it feels like all of these websites just keep trying to consume you. To consume your attention, your time, your thoughts, your habits, your data. It is the ever devouring monster looking for more of you to consume.

It’s like the internet has become this being that is constantly yearning for truth while also censoring anything that even slightly deviates from the prescribed narrative. From the correct politics. The right way of thinking.

It’s a maddening environment.

And I think the only way out of this is just by creating. Creating new websites, new blogs, new ideas, new things. The internet has to be rebuilt anew* and the only way to do it is one at a time.

I’m so very glad I created this website.

*And here I can’t help but keep thinking about Remade Anew and how I still need to finish rewriting it. Gosh, so much writing and so little time.
